Sometimes the internet sucks

Mon Jan 26, 2009, 5:22 PM
A close neighbor and friend of the family was killed in a tractor accident on Saturday. I had already heard the whole story and the brutal details a couple days ago, because news travels fast out here in the country. I just happened to be perusing the article about it online from our local newspaper and there at the bottom of the article was the dreaded link to reader comments. It was full of know it all's and sarcastic comments from members of my local community who clearly had no grasp of the gravity of the entire situation. Stuff, like "stupid old man, he should have sold his old tractor and bought a new one with proper protective equipment, I drove a tractor once and I'd never do something like that." The kind of mindless drivel you'd expect to see on a youtube video, but not what I'd figured to see on a local news website especially considering it involved a human being's death and in a place where friends and family of the deceased were sure to see it. As a bit of a self admitted net junky, it really made me think, how much has the internet altered our way of thinking and our empathy for our fellow humans? Just curious if any of you have had a similar experience or more intellectual opinion on the matter. It's really getting under my skin, but no point in starting a flame war or returning insults on my local news feed, the way I see it, my neighbor and his family deserve better than that.

im so sorry that you had to read such disrespectful things like that on something so awful.

I dont think its the internets fault that peoeple are jerks on it, it just makes it easier for them to show their true colors. :C its really depressing

The calousness of people is amazing and appalling. I've seen many instances like that, and makes me REALLY hate my own species.

Best wishes for the family and friends of the victim.

I'm tough, but thanks for the invite. He was a friend of my father. I really feel for his nephews though, I went to school with them. The really weird part that I left out was that they lost their father under similar circumstances and almost 4 years ago to the day. I can't imagine what they are feeling right now, losing their dad and then their uncle in such a short span of time.

Yeah I know. Have to take the bad with the good. I did see a motivational poster that really fit the other day though. It had a comic book charactor saying "My common sense is tingling (making a play on spider man I know) and then said "Common sense - so rare its a @$##@*&!! superpower". I got a good chuckle out of that. Sad that it hits so close to home sometimes though.

Thank you so much. I knew I could count on thoughtful and meaningful dialog from you and my other friends on here.

Your very welcome. For me, as much as they suck, the jerks make me appreciate the good people in this world.
